The Global Open University is an Indian university established in 2006 in Dimapur, Nagaland. It has been established under the provisions of The Global Open University Act 2006 (Act 3 of 2006) of the Government of Nagaland with a view to introducing vocational, job oriented and employment centric education in the North-East in general and in the State of Nagaland in particular. .
The University has operated since April 2007 from Dimapur, in a campus allotted by the Government of Nagaland.[1] The university's campus was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Nagaland, Hon'ble Shri Neiphiu Rioon 5 June 2007.[1] Two other campuses have subsequently been launched at Wokha and Kohima, with interim headquarters remaining at Dimapur. His Excellency, Governor of Nagaland, is Chancellor of the University. The Global Open University (TGOU), Nagaland is administered by a Governing Council. The Pro-Chancellor is Priya Ranjan Trivedi.
The Global Open University (TGOU) is recognized by the Distance Education Council, New Delhi, and teaches to a UGC-approved syllabus, for all courses as per UGC-approved nomenclatures. It offers students independent study, with flexibility in terms of place, pace and duration of study. The university provides an international student support services network, and provides scholarships for needy and intelligent students.[1]

The Global Open University is a joint public-private partnership venture between the Government of Nagaland and an international charity: the World Institution Building Programme (WIBP), incorporated as a public charitable trust. The state government gives grants-in-aid to sponsor the students from Nagaland by paying their fee, and the WIBP as the sponsoring agency for the university provides Rs. 7 Crore as the Corpus Fund in the name of The Global Open University. The WIBP has also kept a reserve of Rs. 8 Crore for developing the campus of the university for the current financial year. More funds have been assured by the WIBP for the overall growth of the University.[2]
TGOU is recognized as a State University by the University Grants Commission of India (UGC)[3] The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) recognizes IGNOU conferred degrees as on par with the degrees conferred by its members. UGC: UGC Circular No. F1-52/2000 (CPP-II), May 5, 2004. AIU: AIU Circular No. EV/B(449)/94/176915-177115,January 14, 1994, and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) recognizes the Master of Computer Applications and Master of Business Administration program of IGNOU.[4] TGOU is also in the list of universities and institutions approved by Distance Education Council (DEC).

Journalism and Mass Communication
The university also offers short-term online certificate courses apart from its distance education degree courses. These certificate courses are totally online which includes online registration, online study material and also have online examination system. It also awards distance education degrees but they are not totally online and have only online registration facility.[6]
The Global Open University was recognised by the Distance Education Council in 2008[7] and has been accorded provisional recognition for offering programmes (approved by statutory authority of the university) through distance mode.[8]
